Vegan Research Hub

Introduction

The sharp rise in public uptake of veganism, together with serious environmental, legal, and neuro-ethical academic work in animal advocacy, runs in tension with projected increases to 2050 in meat production/consumption by both established and developing industrial economies.

The Killing Industries––meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, fishing, leather, fur––cause the deaths in agony and terror of 3 trillion sentient animals every year: 95,000 every second. By any rational metric this is the greatest crime in history, without parallel in scale and effect yet these industries still enjoy political subsidy, lobbying power, and the public’s normalised view of their activity. They also correctly perceive the threat to their profits as the truth becomes more widely publicised, known, and taught to children––as evidenced by the billions they now spend on green-washing and ethic-washing their publicity campaigns.

This resource hub of interdisciplinary scholarly papers supports the vegan movement with peer-reviewed science. Papers are ordered by topic area and linked with both v.ht short URLs to aid transmission, and also archived locally in PDF in case source URLs change.

  • The neuroscience is clear: these animals feel everything.
  • The environmental science is clear: it is the leading driver of the 4 main non-warfare existential threats to organised human survival.
    • Climate Change (via CO2/methane emissions, deforestation, water-table pollution etc.)
    • Antibiotic Resistance (AMR)
    • Pandemic Zoonoses (like COVID19)
    • Pandemic Obesity
  • The medical science is clear: animal products increase the risks of
    • heart disease
    • cancer
    • diabetes
    • infection
    • obesity
  • The dietary science is clear: vegans thrive and enjoy significant health gains from birth.
  • The economics are clear: growth in veganism and vegan options is sky-rocketing.
  • The biotechnology is clear: we have the means to convert to majority western veganism within 10 years. Public uptake and governmental subsidy are the only obstacles.

“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use. It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights, or buying an electric car. Avoiding consumption of animal products delivers far better environmental benefits than trying to purchase sustainable meat and dairy” Joseph Poore, University of Oxford, Dept. of Biology/Oxford Martin Programme on Food Sustainability Analytics (see Poore & Nemecek, 2018)

“There are two kinds of Cardiologists: vegans and those who haven’t read the data.” Dr. Kim Allan Williams, MD, FACC, FASNC, FAHA, President: American College of Cardiology, Chief of Cardiology: Rush University

“If you really care about animals, stop trying to figure out how to exploit them ‘compassionately’ and just stop exploiting them. Being vegan is easy: Are there social pressures that encourage you to continue to eat, wear and use animal products? Of course there are. But in a patriarchal, racist, homophobic, and ableist society, there are social pressures to participate and engage in sexism, racism, homophobia and ableism. At some point you have to decide who you are and what matters morally to you. And once you decide that you regard victimizing vulnerable nonhumans is not morally acceptable, it is easy to go and stay vegan.” Gary L Francione, Distinguished Professor of Law: Rutgers University, Visiting Professor of Philosophy: University of Lincoln, Honorary Professor of Philosophy: University of East Anglia

If you know a paper which provides evidence supporting veganism, please email me on vegan@phinland.net and I will add it to the list. The only criterion for inclusion is that it must have been published in a respectable peer reviewed scholarly journal, or from an established and respected independent body (e.g. the United Nations).
